Why measure blood pressure?

Blood pressure is measured to assess the condition of the heart and circulatory system. The measurement provides two values: systolic and diastolic pressure. Blood pressure is expressed in millimeters of mercury (mmHg). It can fluctuate during physical activity or in response to increased stress. How is blood pressure measured?

Blood pressure is measured using a manual or automatic device, typically on the upper arm. For an accurate reading, the following is essential:

• A correctly sized cuff appropriate for the circumference of the upper arm
• A relaxed arm during the measurement

What is 24-hour blood pressure monitoring?

24-hour blood pressure monitoring is used when:

• Measurements vary significantly at different times of the day
• There is suspicion of elevated blood pressure during the night
• It is necessary to determine the optimal timing for medication administration

This examination helps to accurately assess blood pressure fluctuations and is especially useful before starting medication therapy.

How is the examination performed?

1. A specialist places a cuff on the upper arm and connects it to a portable blood pressure monitoring device.
2. The device measures blood pressure at set intervals over 24 hours. During this time:
   • You should continue your normal daily activities.
   • Keep your arm relaxed during the measurements.
3. After 24 hours, the device is removed, and the data is processed on a computer. The physician analyzes the results and determines further treatment.
