Cycle ergometry
Veloergometry is a diagnostic test used to evaluate heart function and its response to physical exertion. It is especially useful for patients suspected of having coronary artery disease or other cardiovascular disorders. Veloergometry allows assessment of heart rate and blood pressure behavior during exercise, as well as helps identify possible cardiac arrhythmias or blood flow issues.

How Is veloergometry performed?
During the examination, the patient sits on a special bicycle – a veloergometer – and electrodes are attached to their chest and back to record an electrocardiogram (ECG) during exercise. The patient pedals at a set pace, and the workload is gradually increased until a submaximal heart rate is reached. The test helps determine the heart’s ability to adapt to physical exertion and records any potential disturbances or abnormalities.
How does veloergometry proceed?
IDuring the examination, the patient sits on the veloergometer while medical staff monitor the heart activity and the patient’s condition. Meanwhile, the physician observes changes in the ECG and, if necessary, records signs of impaired blood flow to the heart, cardiac arrhythmias, or other abnormalities. Throughout the test, the patient can communicate with the doctor, reporting symptoms such as fatigue, chest pain, shortness of breath, or dizziness. The workload is reduced or stopped if significant complaints arise.
The test is performed by gradually increasing the workload until the desired target is reached, while closely monitoring the patient’s heart response.
Why is veloergometry important?
Veloergometry is an important tool for diagnosing cardiovascular diseases, identifying potential heart function disorders, and developing an appropriate treatment plan.
Preparation for the examination.
There is no need to arrive fasting for the examination; however, as with any physical activity, it is advisable not to eat a large meal immediately beforehand. It is also recommended to stay well hydrated. Before the examination, the patient should undress the upper body (it is advisable to bring a fitted T-shirt or sports bra for women).
The examination, including preparation, lasts approximately 60 minutes, with the physical exertion typically not exceeding 15 minutes.
