Fetal Echocardiography

Fetal echocardiography is a high-precision ultrasound examination that allows for a detailed assessment of the fetal heart’s anatomy and function during pregnancy. The examination enables evaluation of the structure of the heart chambers and valves, heart rhythm, and blood flow through the valves, arteries, and veins. These parameters help to detect both structural and functional cardiac abnormalities at an early stage and, if necessary, plan appropriate monitoring or treatment after birth.

The procedure is completely painless and safe for both the mother and the fetus, lasting approximately 20 minutes. During the examination, the expectant mother lies in a comfortable supine position while high-resolution, real-time images of the fetal heart are obtained using an ultrasound probe.

Fetal echocardiography is recommended in the following cases:

• Suspicion or detection of fetal heart structural abnormalities during ultrasound screening;
• Irregularities in fetal heart rhythm – tachycardia (>200 bpm), bradycardia (<100 bpm), or irregular rhythm;
• Increased or decreased amniotic fluid volume;
• A first-degree relative with a congenital heart defect;
• Increased nuchal translucency (>2.5 mm) detected in the first-trimester screening;
• Maternal conditions such as diabetes, systemic lupus erythematosus, antiphospholipid syndrome, or the presence of Rh antibodies;
• Maternal age over 35 years;
• Chromosomal number or structural abnormalities identified through amniocentesis;
• Structural anomalies of other fetal organs observed on ultrasound;
• Twin pregnancies, especially in cases of twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome;
• Pregnancy achieved through assisted reproductive technology (IVF).
