4D Transesophageal Echocardiography (TEE)
Transesophageal Echocardiography (TEE): A high-precision cardiac diagnostic method.
Transesophageal echocardiography is a modern and highly accurate ultrasound diagnostic technique that provides detailed information about the heart’s anatomy, structure, and function. During this procedure, an ultrasound probe is inserted through the esophagus, allowing high-resolution images that enable careful evaluation of the heart chambers, valves, and blood vessels.
TEE is especially useful in cases where standard transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) is insufficient for precise diagnosis of various heart conditions such as valvular diseases, congenital heart anomalies, presence of thrombi, or infections. This method allows physicians to perform a thorough cardiac examination to assess complex pathologies that may be difficult to diagnose using other imaging techniques.
TEE is performed when precise analysis of heart functions and structures is required, including:
- Detailed evaluation of heart valves;
- Diagnosis of endocarditis and other inflammatory processes;
- Detection of thrombi and other pathological formations within the heart chambers;
- Identification of aortic pathologies, including dissections;
- Preparation for specific cardiac surgical procedures or invasive interventions.
How the examination is performed?
The procedure is conducted under the supervision of experienced specialists, ensuring maximum safety and comfort for the patient:
- Mild sedation is administered to reduce discomfort;
- The throat mucosa is locally anesthetized to facilitate the insertion of the probe;
- An ultrasound probe is carefully introduced through the esophagus to obtain precise visualization of the heart;
- The entire procedure typically lasts about 30 minutes.
Preparation for TEE:
- It is recommended to avoid eating and drinking for at least 6 hours before the procedure to reduce the risk of nausea or vomiting during the examination. A light dinner the evening before is advisable;
- Due to the effects of sedation, dizziness or drowsiness may occur after the procedure. Please arrive with a companion who can assist you in getting home safely;
- Inform your doctor if you have removable dental prostheses, braces, or any other oral implants, as dental prostheses will need to be removed during the procedure;
- Wear comfortable and loose-fitting clothing to ensure comfort during the examination;
- Remember that the procedure is safe and associated with minimal discomfort. Anesthesia helps to reduce throat irritation, and your condition will be continuously monitored by medical staff;
- Mild throat soreness may occur after the examination and can last for 1–2 days.
