Abdominal ultrasound
Abdominal ultrasonography is a safe, painless, and informative diagnostic method that allows for the evaluation of internal organs such as the liver, gallbladder, pancreas, kidneys, spleen, and urinary bladder.
When is an abdominal ultrasound necessary?
This examination is generally recommended if the patient experiences:
- Abdominal pain or discomfort;
- Digestive issues, including nausea or bloating;
- Suspected kidney stones or gallstones;
- Signs of liver, kidney, or pancreas diseases;
- Urinary tract problems, such as frequent or painful urination;
- Preventive health screening.
How is the examination performed?
The patient lies on their back, and a special gel is applied to the skin to ensure better transmission of ultrasound waves. The doctor gently moves the ultrasound probe over the abdomen to obtain the necessary images. The procedure takes approximately 15–20 minutes and is completely painless.
How to prepare for the examination?
To ensure the most accurate results:
- Do not eat for 6 hours before the examination to avoid gas formation in the intestines;
- Avoid carbonated drinks and coffee when drinking water;
- If the bladder is being examined, it is recommended to drink 0.5–1 liter of water before the procedure and avoid urinating;
- Bring the doctor’s referral (if required);
- Bring previous examination reports and blood test results to help the doctor make a more precise evaluation.
Are there any risks associated with the examination?
Abdominal ultrasound is a completely safe diagnostic method that does not involve exposure to ionizing radiation.
