A cardiac ultrasound, also known as echocardiography, is a painless and effective diagnostic test used to assess the health and function of the heart. By using high-frequency sound waves (ultrasound), the physician can obtain detailed images of the heart’s structure and activity. Echocardiography offers the highest resolution among imaging modalities, ensuring accurate and reliable diagnostics.

How is an echocardiographic examination performed?

During the examination, the patient lies on their left side. Three electrodes are attached to the chest, and a harmless gel is applied to the skin to ensure accurate ultrasound imaging. The physician uses a handheld probe (transducer), gently pressing it against the chest to evaluate the heart valves and blood flow through the vessels. The procedure is completely painless, requires no special preparation, and is safe – even for pregnant women.

When is a cardiac ultrasound performed?

A cardiac ultrasound is performed to assess heart health, particularly when symptoms such as chest pain, shortness of breath, dizziness, or fatigue are present. It also plays a key role in monitoring patients with previously diagnosed heart conditions, such as hypertension, heart failure, or valvular heart disease.
