Electrical Cardioversion
Cardioversion is a medical procedure used to restore normal heart rhythm in patients with cardiac arrhythmias such as atrial fibrillation or other supraventricular arrhythmias. In this procedure, a controlled electric shock is administered to the heart to synchronize its electrical activity and restore its natural rhythm. This eliminates unwanted arrhythmias.
Cardioversion is performed using a special device called a cardioversion defibrillator. This device regulates the amount of electrical energy delivered to the heart. This can be a single shock or a series of shocks. The procedure is performed under light sedation to ensure patient comfort and minimize discomfort during treatment.
During the procedure, the physician continuously monitors the patient to ensure safety and effectiveness. He or she adjusts the energy level and shock duration depending on the type of arrhythmia. Cardioversion is considered a highly effective treatment for atrial fibrillation, with success rates of up to 90% in restoring normal rhythm.
This method is usually quick and safe, and most patients can resume their daily activities within a few days of the procedure. However, further treatment, such as long-term medication, may be necessary to prevent the cardiac arrhythmia from recurring. Patients are often advised to make lifestyle changes—such as reducing caffeine and alcohol consumption, managing stress, and maintaining a healthy weight—to help keep their heart rhythm stable.
Preparation for cardioversion:
- It is recommended that you fast (do not eat or drink anything) for at least 6 hours before the procedure.
- It is important to inform your doctor about any medications you are taking, especially blood thinners.
- After the procedure, the patient is usually monitored for 1–2 hours to ensure that no serious side effects occur. If everything is stable, the patient can be discharged home.
