Electrical Cardioversion
Cardioversion is a medical procedure performed to restore a normal heart rhythm in patients with cardiac arrhythmias, such as atrial fibrillation or other supraventricular arrhythmias. The procedure involves delivering a controlled electric shock to the heart to synchronize its electrical activity and re-establish a natural rhythm, thereby eliminating unwanted arrhythmias.
Cardioversion is carried out using a specialized device called a cardioversion defibrillator. This device adjusts the amount of electrical energy delivered to the heart, which can be a single shock or a series of shocks. The procedure is performed under mild sedation to ensure patient comfort and minimize discomfort during the treatment.
During the procedure, the physician continuously monitors the patient to ensure safety and effectiveness, adjusting the energy level and shock duration depending on the nature of the arrhythmia. Cardioversion is considered a highly effective treatment for atrial fibrillation, with success rates reaching up to 90% in restoring normal rhythm.
This method is generally quick and safe, with most patients resuming their daily activities within a few days after the procedure. However, further treatment such as long-term medication may be necessary to prevent arrhythmia recurrence. Patients are often advised to adopt lifestyle changes – such as reducing caffeine and alcohol intake, managing stress, and maintaining a healthy weight – to help sustain a stable heart rhythm.
Preparation for Cardioversion:
- Before the procedure, it is recommended to fast (no food or drink) for at least 6 hours.
- It is important to inform your doctor about all medications you are taking, especially blood thinners.
- After the procedure, the patient is usually monitored for 1–2 hours to ensure there are no serious adverse reactions. If everything is stable, the patient may then be discharged home.
