Polysomnography

Why is sleep important?

Sleep is a vital component of human health, influencing both physical and emotional well-being. Quality sleep supports immune system function, brain activity, and energy levels, while also aiding the body’s recovery. Chronic sleep deprivation or disturbances can lead to serious health issues, including cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and mental health disorders.

Polysomnography is an effective method for diagnosing sleep apnea – one of the most common sleep disorders that can impact overall health and quality of life.

Signs that may indicate sleep disorders:

  • Loud snoring or episodes of breathing cessation during sleep (observed by a partner);
  • Frequent daytime fatigue or lack of energy;
  • Difficulty concentrating and memory decline;
  • Morning headaches upon waking;
  • Increased irritability or mood swings;
  • Insomnia or interrupted sleep episodes.

What is sleep analysis using the polysomnography method?

Polysomnography is a diagnostic method used to examine breathing disorders during sleep. This examination allows for the detection of potentially life-threatening breathing disorders during sleep, such as obstructive sleep apnea and central sleep apnea, neuromuscular disorders, as well as other respiratory disturbances during sleep. Polysomnography is considered the gold standard for diagnosing life-threatening breathing disorders.

How is sleep analysis using the polysomnography method performed?

Specialists at the center instruct the patient on how to properly set up and use the portable device designed for sleep analysis. Before going to bed, the patient attaches the device themselves, and the examination is conducted overnight while the patient sleeps in their usual environment at home. The device records several important physiological parameters, including respiratory movements in the chest and abdomen, airflow through the nose, blood oxygen levels, and heart activity (electrocardiogram). It also detects snoring sounds and helps evaluate whether body position affects breathing or sleep quality.

The following day, the patient returns the device to the clinic, where the doctor analyzes the results and prepares a report.

The report is usually ready within one week.
The examination is available for patients aged 16 and older.
