Pulmonologist
A pulmonologist is a medical doctor specializing in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of lung and respiratory tract diseases. These conditions include bronchial asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), bronchiectasis, as well as acute and chronic infections, and other respiratory disorders.
What to expect during a pulmonologist consultation?
Before the appointment, the patient undergoes spirometry to allow the pulmonologist to assess lung function parameters during the visit. During the consultation, the pulmonologist evaluates the patient’s overall health status, listens to their complaints, and reviews previous test results in relation to the current condition. After establishing an accurate diagnosis, the pulmonologist develops a personalized treatment plan, which may include medications, lifestyle modifications, or other therapeutic interventions. If necessary, referrals to other specialists are provided to ensure a comprehensive approach to the patient’s health care.
When to visit a pulmonologist?
- Persistent cough – if the cough lasts more than two months;
- Shortness of breath – experiencing breathlessness during physical activity or even at rest;
- Wheezing – the presence of whistling or wheezing sounds during breathing, which may occur during inhalation or exhalation;
- Excessive sputum production – healthy lungs should not produce sputum;
- Increased risk of respiratory diseases – history of smoking, exposure to polluted environments, or family history of respiratory conditions;
- Chronic lung diseases;
- Frequent respiratory infections.
