Urinary tract and prostate ultrasound

Ultrasound examination of the urinary tract and prostate is part of the abdominal cavity assessment.

It is a safe, painless, yet highly informative diagnostic method that allows evaluation of the kidneys, urinary bladder, and, in men, the prostate gland. Using ultrasound, various conditions can be diagnosed, such as kidney stones, potential tumors, urinary retention, and prostate enlargement. The procedure is performed with modern ultrasound equipment, providing high-precision images that aid in the early detection of various diseases and in selecting the most appropriate treatment strategy.

When is an ultrasound of the urinary tract and prostate necessary?

The examination is recommended if the patient experiences:

  • Suspected kidney stones;
  • Frequent, painful, or difficult urination;
  • Pain or discomfort in the lower back or lower abdomen;
  • Blood in the urine;
  • Symptoms of prostate enlargement (such as frequent urination at night, weak urine stream).

How to prepare for the examination?

To ensure the most accurate results:

  • It is recommended to drink 1 liter of water before the examination and avoid urinating, as a full bladder helps obtain clearer images;
  • Avoid heavy meals for 6 hours prior to the examination;
  • Bring a referral from your doctor (if you have one);
  • Bring previous examination reports and blood test results (if available).

How is the examination performed?

The examination of the kidneys, urinary bladder, and prostate is conducted through the abdominal wall while the patient lies on their back and side.
The procedure lasts approximately 15–20 minutes and is painless.

Are there any risks associated with the examination?

Urinary tract and prostate ultrasonography is completely safe and does not use ionizing radiation.
