Cycle ergometry
Veloergometry is a diagnostic test used to evaluate heart function and its response to physical exertion. It is especially useful for patients suspected of having coronary artery disease or other cardiovascular disorders. Veloergometry allows assessment of heart rate and blood pressure behavior during exercise, as well as helps identify possible cardiac arrhythmias or blood flow issues.

How Is veloergometry performed?
During the examination, the patient sits on a special bicycle – a veloergometer – and electrodes are attached to their chest and back to record an electrocardiogram (ECG) during exercise. The patient pedals at a set pace, and the workload is gradually increased until a submaximal heart rate is reached. The test helps determine the heart’s ability to adapt to physical exertion and records any potential disturbances or abnormalities.
How does veloergometry proceed?
IDuring the examination, the patient sits on the veloergometer while medical staff monitor the heart activity and the patient’s condition. Meanwhile, the physician observes changes in the ECG and, if necessary, records signs of impaired blood flow to the heart, cardiac arrhythmias, or other abnormalities. Throughout the test, the patient can communicate with the doctor, reporting symptoms such as fatigue, chest pain, shortness of breath, or dizziness. The workload is reduced or stopped if significant complaints arise.
The test is performed by gradually increasing the workload until the desired target is reached, while closely monitoring the patient’s heart response.
Why is veloergometry important?
Veloergometry is an important tool for diagnosing cardiovascular diseases, identifying potential heart function disorders, and developing an appropriate treatment plan.
Preparation for the examination.
Please bring comfortable sportswear and athletic shoes to the test to ensure freedom of movement and comfort during physical exertion. The upper body will need to be uncovered before the procedure – women are advised to bring a sports bra.
It is recommended to discontinue the use of beta-blockers (e.g., metoprolol, bisoprolol, betaxolol) two days prior to the bicycle ergometry test, unless otherwise instructed by your treating physician.
Fasting before the test is not required. However, similar to other physical activities, it is not advisable to consume a large or heavy meal shortly beforehand. We recommend eating a light meal and drinking sufficient fluids to ensure optimal well-being during the test. Additionally, please avoid consuming caffeinated beverages (such as coffee, tea, or energy drinks) for at least 4–6 hours prior to the procedure.
The entire examination, including preparation, takes approximately 60 minutes. The actual physical exertion usually lasts no longer than 15 minutes.
